Time in a bottle?

Yes, please!

New vintage (isn't that an oxy
moron?) tatting thread arrived today. A nice purchase off eBay; about $10 with shipping for a box of 9 balls of vividly-colored Perle 8 cotton made by Cartier-Bresson (I dunno who that is, but it's from Paris, according to the box). One ball is missing (I suspect white, big whoop), and the chocolate brown is partially used, but the other colors, including bright green, black, a tawny gold, and a dusky blue are unused. Also included was a vintage Susan Bates bobbin-style shuttle.

They are strong and bright - they make me happy.

I also received the tin from another thread auction I won (over 50 spools of vintage tatting thread). The tin was pictured as part of the auction, with spools displayed in it, but the package arrived sans tin. I know old cookie tins can be kind of iffy, but if it's pictured in the auction, holding the thread, and it doesn't specifically say "tin not included"... wouldn't you expect it? My friends encouraged me to write the seller and mention that I was unhappy, and she sent it at her own expense (pretty much canceling out half of what I paid her for it with shipping) and apologized. I hadn't threatened with negative feedback or anything, just let her know that I felt like I didn't get what I was expecting in full and in the future, she might want to check with the buyer about boxes and tins.

This one isn't very interesting, but it is still in fair condition and could hold thread for storage.

I worked on another tatted bookmark, using some of my vintage thread: size 30 in mint green and a baby blue. My tension and evenness has improved; I seem to do better with the size 30 than the size 10. I will have to take a picture of some of my bookmarks to share.

I have had no time to work on my knitting Project at work. I knit two rows - maybe 160 stitches - today. One row during first break, one during second break. I knit at a steady pace, I just don't get to "break" on my break. I run to the restroom, come back, and find myself being asked questions by co-workers. Now, I don't mind helping them at all.... but I want to knit! This is a project I can't take to SNB because the recipient attends. *pout*

This weekend may find me traveling about 90 miles west to view - and perhaps buy - that spinning wheel. As mentioned before, I found it on CL and it's not like the other ones. It has nice, clean lines and a darker finish, which I admit a fondness for. Although I really shouldn't be spending the money right now, I know if I hesitate, it will be gone, and I will berate myself for it. I do have money set aside - I save up birthday money and "holiday money" my parents give me. It's kind of an emergency cash stash, but if I just take a little out of there, and curtail my restaurant and shopping for the next two months, I will be fine.

Two friends are going with me: one who has a mini-van (I doubt a spinning wheel could fit in my car) and one whose opinion on the state of wood and mechanical matters I trust implicitly. I want to make sure I am not buying a "jalopy" that will fall apart once you kick the tires, if you catch my drift.

If the unit is actually manufactured by the company the seller believes it is (and my research seems to confirm), it may be around 35-40 years old, although the seller states the owner (a family friend) thinks it's closer to 70 years old. If I do buy it, I will contact the manufacturing company for assistance in dating the project (and if any repairs are needed).

I admit to being quite excited by the prospect of learning to spin. I love colors, and sometimes I want mixes and colorways I can't find in the store. Maybe I can find roving dyed in colors I like, once I've got the knack, and then make the yarn like I want it to be. I really dream of having a nice, cloudy blue, with hints of indigo and soft lavender, and the faintest glimmer of gossamer silver, crocheted or knitted up into a beautiful lace shawl.

And to someday learn to card the wool and all the process that comes along before that? Sounds intriguing.

Oooh, I'm seriously wanting to squee over the thought, now.
